MLB All Star Thoughts

by RT

Question:
Should the MLB All-Star game determine which league gets home field advantage in the World Series?

Answer: Yes. What people fail to realize is that the MLB All-Star game is a lot better than the NBA All-Star game or the Pro Bowl. It is not perfect but it is the best All-Star game out there.

The biggest problem with the game itself is that it is not played or managed correctly. What if Lincecum pitched the first three innings, Haren pitched the next three and a combination of K-Rod, Hoffman and Broxton (if he was healthy) finished off the game? What if the best three or four players (Pujols, Hanley Ramirez and Braun) and played the entire game and players like Prince Fielder were on the bench to pinch hit in the later innings? Now that is an entertaining game.

The All-Star / World Series “problem”

As I said above, the All-Star game should determine what league has home field advantage only if the seeds of the two teams in the Series are the same. That’s right, it is time to seed the playoffs so the team with the highest seed gets home field advantage in the World Series.

Here are the seeds if the season ended now:

National League

1) Dodgers
2) Giants
3) Phillies
4) Cardinals

American League

1) Red Sox
2) Yankees
3) Tigers
4) Rangers

(Yes, the team with the second best record should be the second seed and it almost makes more sense when that team plays in the same division as the top-seed)

Using the logic spelled out above, if the Dodgers and Red Sox meet in the World Series, the winning league in the All-Star game would give their respective pennant winner home field advantage.

This solution works for two reasons:

1) The All-Star game can still count and might actually force the managers, players and front offices realize that this game should be taken more seriously.

2) The team that dominates the regular season can feel secure that they will have a very good chance to have home field advantage in the World Series.

(As always, we encourage you to give us your thoughts on this proposal)
